FAQs
| Q | Are CSTD courses accredited? |
| A | CSTD was formally established as an independent body in 1979. Before then we, the tutors, had been running in-service supervision training for the Richmond Fellowship, whom we would like to honour for our early learning in this field. Since 1979 we have been established as a Supervision training body and were probably the first in the country to focus exclusively in this field. Supervision in the Helping Professions was published in 1989 and is now in its third edition. It is a seminal text, has sold over thirty five thousand copies and has been translated into Czech, Greek and soon Swedish. We formalised our training into a certificate format in 1995 when supervisors were being asked to show evidence of their training. The training consists of 4 three-day modules plus supervision on supervision either one to one or in a group. The assessment process is three tutorials with one of the CSTD tutors, ten supervision sessions on supervision plus a rigorous self and peer assessment process with the student's supervisor, supervisees and a peer/colleague. We have recently established an Institute for Reflective Practice for our graduates where they can attend to their ongoing CPPD. We have decided not to seek external accreditation for our certificate. It would considerably increase the cost of the course and would involve different student assignments than we presently require. We have found that our training has been running long enough to carry weight with employing authorities. |

Courses
The Centre has been providing supervision training both as open and bespoke courses for organisations across the helping professions since 1979. These include social services departments, hospitals, drug and alcohol treatment centres, clinical psychology departments, clergy, Relate, schools, counselling and psychotherapy organisations.
The Centre staff have published widely in the field including Supervision in the Helping Professions (3rd edition 2006) by Peter Hawkins and Robin Shohet. It is still an Open University best seller and has been translated into Czech and Greek. The courses have now been run in a number of countries including New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa.
The rich mixture of participants with different backgrounds and orientations that attend the courses helps to build an environment that challenges assumptions as well as providing a supportive community for learning. We introduced the supervision certificate eight years ago and are now delighted to be combining with Bath Consultancy Group to provide a certificate for supervisors of mentors, coaches and consultants (see following page).
Our courses and our work developed out of our passion for wanting our own and other people’s work places to be sources of nourishment, support, ongoing learning and enjoyment. Research has shown that meaningful work is a major contribution to a person’s well-being. We see supervision as a very important element in this. The Centre has expanded the number of courses available from the original Core course. All reflect our basic commitment to helping to create a learning environment for individuals, teams and organisations.

Judy Ryde
Marianne Fry Lecture Judy gave the Marianne Fry Lecture this year in July and the subject is ‘White Identity in Psychotherapy: Can dialogic, intersubjective psychotherapy help white people work more effectively in a racialized context?’
The Marianne Fry Lectures began after her death in 1998. Her friends and students wanted to perpetuate, for the benefit of later generations of Gestalt therapists and trainees, the values and interests of a distinguished and beloved Gestalt trainer. The lectures – of which there have been five so far, focus notably on the relationship between Gestalt and spirituality, Germany and the Holocaust, dialogue, and family therapy. The website address is www.mariannefrylectures.co.uk
Conferences Two workshops on the theme of whiteness in counselling, psychotherapy and the helping professions are also being given at conferences put on by Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility:
Psychotherapy and Politics: Realising the Potential at Strathclyde University on 8th and 9th May 2009.
Power in the Therapy Room on November 21st in London, venue to be announced.
